Something perfect

The Universe Law is impartial. It will give you anything you believe. It will throw you garbage or roses depending on the energy you put in. You are the one in charge, and you must accept that and stand alone. If you think God is coming down to fix things for you, forget it. God is out playing golf The wisest men follow their own direction. Everything comes to him who hustles while he waits. You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it true.

You may have to work for it, however. If you do not do it excellently, do not do it at all. Because if it is not excellent, it will not be profitable or fun, and if you are not in business for fun or profit, what the hell are you doing there? Every man takes the limits of his own field of vision, for the limits of the world.

He who has begun his task has half done it. Whoever I am and whatever I am doing, some kind excellence is within my reach. You cannot cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water. Do not let yourself indulge in vain wishes. Success or failure depends more upon attitude than upon capacity. Successful people act as though they have accomplished or are enjoying something. Soon it becomes a reality. Act, look, feel successful, conduct yourself accordingly, and you will be amazed at the positive results. Remember, a dead fish can float downstream, but it takes a live one to swim upstream. Quit now, you will never make it. If you disregard this advice, you will be halfway there.

To love is to admire with the heart

To love is to admire with the heart: to admire is to love with the mind. You have to believe in yourself. Carpe diem quam minimum credula postero. (Seize the day and put as little trust as you can in the morrow.) I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness or abilities that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again. The rung of a ladder was never meant to rest upon, but only to hold a mans foot long enough to enable him to put the other somewhat higher. With our thoughts we make the world. The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them, to the impossible.

Forgiving those who hurt us is the key to personal peace. The method of the enterprising is to plan with audacity, and execute with vigor, to sketch out a map of possibilities and then to treat them as probabilities. How soon will you realise that the only thing you do not have is the direct experience that there is nothing you need that you do not have? There is no such thing as a problem without a gift for you in its hands. You seek problems because you need their gifts. Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.

Whatever you can do…

Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now. Dwell in possibility. When we seek to discover the best in others, we somehow bring out the best in ourselves.

I am what I am.

Family thought fashion wasn’t very interesting. So I hid that. My customers are successful workingwomen. A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous. You have a more interesting life if you wear impressive clothes. I feel that things happen for a reason and open up new opportunities.

Online media is increasingly influential in fashion. I adore the challenge of creating truly modern clothes, where a woman’s personality and sense of self are revealed. I want people to see the dress, but focus on the woman. I would like the people that buy my clothes to understand that for me it’s one small piece of art. I am always locked in my design studio. I like the irony in my work.

I sometimes feel that a pattern is almost a fashion statement in itself. Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury. Those fashion designers are just crazy; but aren’t we all? I have my favourite fashion decade, yes, yes, yes: ’60s. It was a sort of little revolution; the clothes were amazing but not too exaggerated. Some people think luxury is the opposite of poverty. It is not. It is the opposite of vulgarity.

I never like to think that I…

Grunge is a hippied romantic version of punk. I always thought what you wore underneath was as important as what you wear on top. I like the body. I like to design everything to do with the body. It’s a philosophy of life. A practice. If you do this, something will change, what will change is that you will change, your life will change, and if you can change you, you can perhaps change the world. I’ve always tried to push myself technically and to push myself visually. That’s been part of the journey.

I never like to think that I design for a particular person. I design for the woman I wanted to be, the woman I used to be, and – to some degree – the woman I’m still a little piece of. It is difficult to talk about fashion in the abstract, without a human body before my eyes, without drawings, without a choice of fabric – without a practical or visual reality. I love women’s fashion, but women don’t need me as much as men do. It’s the men who have nothing to wear. It is not easy to dress well. A lot of self-importance goes on in the fashion industry. I’m not like that.

First I made a dress because I was pregnant and I wanted to be the most beautiful pregnant woman. Then I made a sweater because I wanted to have one that wasn’t like anyone else’s. All I did my first year at Vogue was Xerox. The important thing is to take your time and not get stressed. My job is to bring out in people what they wouldn’t dare do themselves. I am no longer concerned with sensation and innovation, but with the perfection of my style.
